The Master of Geology programme is organised jointly by KU Leuven and Ghent University.


Students will receive in-depth training in general geology and specialised training in selected disciplines of geology. Furthermore, emphasis is put on acquiring general academic skills such as research and exploration, reporting, and cooperation with fellow students and researchers. The student receives the necessary training to analyse and solve new, broader and more complex geological problems. He obtains the scientific attitude to solve these problems by selecting and applying advanced methods (qualitative and quantitative field analysis, direct and indirect observation techniques, physical and chemical analytical techniques, modelling of geological processes, etc.).
Students should not only have hands-on knowledge of the techniques and the basic principles of geology, but also be able to appraise the potential and limitations of the different techniques. In a rational and scientific way, students must be able to process and report research results, publish them in reports and in a Master's thesis (monograph), and present and defend these results orally in a structured way, aided by modern communication techniques. The programme also emphasises the social attitudes and skills needed to work in an interdisciplinary team to find the best possible coherent solution for a specific problem.

The master’s programme offers 4 different majors: Geodynamics and Georesources, Surface Processes and Paleoenvironments, Geology of Basins and Soil and Groundwater.



  • In Geodynamics and Georesources, you will study rock-forming processes and mineral resources in the subsurface. The interaction between various physico-chemical processes in the Earth forms the core of this major. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complexity of the various interacting physical and chemical rock-forming processes and apply this knowledge to the exploration of natural resources.

  • In Surface Processes and Paleoenvironments, you will study the interaction between the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere. The focus is on understanding present-day and past processes and placing these processes in a context of global change on various time scales. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complex interaction of surface processes relating to the variability of various aspects of the Earth’s surface.

  • In Geology of Basins, you will study the processes steering the genesis and evolution of sedimentary basins and the surrounding areas. Special attention is given to sedimentary fluxes, the spatial organisation of basins, the evolution of the palaeoenvironment, dating of events and exploration strategies. You will develop the ability to analyse and explain the complexity of interacting processes that determine the evolution of sedimentary basins.

  • In Soil and Groundwater, you will study hydrogeological and pedological characteristics and processes with a focus on fundamental and applied aspects of soils and groundwater, including the response to external influences and aimed at sustainable management and protection of these resources. You will develop the attitude to analyse and explain the complexity of physical and chemical processes influencing soil and groundwater, and to come up with remedial measures.

TOELATINGSVOORWAARDEN

Het bezit van de graad van bachelor, verworven in een academische gerichte bacheloropleiding, geeft recht op een rechtstreekse toegang tot minstens één masteropleiding.
Andere manieren om van een bachelor door te stromen naar een master:

  • na een professioneel gerichte bacheloropleiding dient er een schakelprogramma te worden gevolgd. 
  • na een academische bacheloropleiding met een andere kwalificatie dient er eventueel een voorbereidingsprogramma te worden gevolgd.

Extra taalvoorwaarden voor internationale studenten

De onderwijsinstellingen kunnen het slagen in een examen in de onderwijstaal opleggen als toelatingseis voor houders van een buitenlands diploma.

Beroepsuitwegen

Graduates' specialisation within the programme need not strictly determine their future career path in geology or in wider field of the geosciences. You may be involved in development tasks, research or management functions. As a consultant, you are likely to find a job in environmental geology, hydrogeology or geotechnology. In industry, you will often be involved in exploration, exploitation and treatment of natural resources. In governmental agencies, you may be responsible for the inventory and management of the subsurface or for diverse environmental issues.
