Bijzondere toelating

The Master in Biology is primarily attuned to bachelors in Biology, but some related bachelors alo have access. Admission after permission, for holders of an academic bachelor or master in exact, medical, engineering or industrial sciences.

Universiteit Antwerpen
The Master in Biology comprises 120 credits, to be acquired over two years.
Per year you register for 60 credits (deviations possible between 54 and 66).
In contrast to the other specializations which are taught mainly in Dutch, the language of instruction in the specialization “Biodiversity: conservation and restoration” is English for all courses.
In this specialization there are no options such as Education or Management.
The entire first semester and also the main part of the second semester of the first master year consist of compulsory courses.
During the first semester students decide which optional courses they will take, and on which subjects they want to do the Master project and Conservation internship.
These components of the programme are largely undertaken in the second master year.

Biology is a fundamental scientific discipline focusing on formulating and testing hypotheses through observations and experiments in the lab or the field.
As a Biology student, you will thus be actively involved in ongoing research in the various internationally oriented research groups of the department of Biology, whatever the specialisation you choose.
Likewise, the teaching in each of these specialisations is supported by the staff and expertise of these research groups.
In the specialization “Biodiversity: conservation and restoration”, emphasis lies on the global biodiversity crisis, one of the key elements of global change.
You acquire insight into the causes and consequences of the current woldwide loss of plant and animal species, and into the theory and practice of managing endangered species and the conservation and restoration of habitats.
Linkages with society, for example, biodiversity policy, legislation and international treaties, will also be highlighted.
Students will undertake an internship with an external organization involved in conservation/restoration.

De opleiding bestaat ook in het Nederlands: Biologie: Biodiversiteit, behoud en herstel

Beroepsbeschrijving- en uitwegen

Biology is related to the broader society in many ways, and biologists’ employment is consequently much broader than generally thought.
Fundamental and applied scientific research (> 40% of graduates) at universities and institutes (in Flanders for example KBIN, INBO, VIB, KMDA, …) is a first major job outlet.
A research carreer usually starts wih a PhD, through an appointment as university assistant, PhD grantee or project collaborator.
A full academic carreer is achieved by only a limited number of excellent researchers.
The private sector offers lots of possibilities in Research & Development (often after having received a PhD) and in marketing, among others in the medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors and in industrial labs.
In Belgium, biologists are also much sought by governmental bodies (at federal, regional, province and community level), by nature associations, and by consultancy bureaus, especially in the sector of the environment.
About one fifth of the graduates becomes a teacher in secundary schools or in higher education outside of the university.
Masters in Biology specialized in “Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration” are specifically prepared for positions which require them to analyse policy and influence decision-making in the field of biodiversity protection. Graduates are often employed by NGO’s, consulting agencies and governmental bodies at both national and international level. As mentioned above, research offers another career opportunity, abroad but also in Belgium with its well developed research landscape in the field of biodiversity.
The recognition of the value of biodiversity for ecosystem services to society makes specialisation in conservation and restoration a much sought asset.
